Murph Vests: Complete Weight, Movement Fit, and Scaling

A Murph vest should fit the workout and your host’s current rules. Confirm the complete assembled weight and readiness before choosing a package.

Practice the equipment before the event

Check shoulder position, comfortable breathing, and secure inserts through the planned movements. A plate pair’s label may exclude the carrier, so weigh or calculate the full setup. Follow the event’s rules on load and partitioning rather than assuming every host uses the same format. Appropriate scaling comes from movement ability and coaching, not the vest’s maximum capacity. Compare the labeled carrier alternatives below by approved inserts and fit, then practice manageable sessions before the long workout.

  • Follow the host’s current load, partitioning, and scaling rules.
  • Count the complete vest weight, including its carrier.
  • Practice equipment fit and movement quality before the event.

Prepare for the workout you will actually perform

Murph consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another 1-mile run. Follow your event’s rules for vest weight, movement standards, and partitioning. Weigh the complete vest rather than assuming the plate label equals total weight.

Practice each movement and build appropriate unloaded volume before adding a vest. Where partitioning is allowed, 20 rounds of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 squats produces the full middle totals. Scale repetitions, running, movements, or load with your coach. A half workout reduces total volume; taking a break halfway through the full totals still leaves the full workout. Consider heat, pacing, and recovery as part of preparation.

If you have back, neck, joint, or balance problems, discuss added-load exercise with a clinician before starting. Harvard Health explains the cautions around wearable weights.

Track loaded walks with the Rucking app

For the walking part of your routine, record total carried weight, route, distance, pace, and time. Compare similar sessions rather than judging progress only by a calorie number. The Rucking app is available for iPhone and Android.

Plan a loaded walk with the Weighted Vest Calorie Calculator or Rucking Calorie Calculator. Use the Rucking Weight Loss Calculator to explore longer-term projections alongside your nutrition plan. These are estimates, not measured energy expenditure or promised weight loss. Walking estimates do not measure a lifting session, mixed WOD, running workout, or therapeutic effect.
