5.11 vest for CrossFit: identify the model first
“5.11 CrossFit vest” can refer to more than one TacTec product. The TacTec Trainer Weight Vest linked here is style 56693, a training model with adjustable yoke straps, a stretch cummerbund, and internal plate-retention straps.

Plate and fit checks
5.11 names its own and Rogue weight plates and its TacTec Weight Plate Sandbag as compatible options. Secure each insert using both the internal strap and the outer closure flap. The empty Trainer is listed at 0.92 kg, about 2 lb, which contributes to the full workout load.
Try a full breath, arm swing, slow squat, and the intended exercise at a manageable load. Check neck and hip clearance rather than assuming that a brand or “one size” description establishes your fit.

Use the workout standard, then scale to readiness
CrossFit’s Murph page describes the benchmark and a 14/20 lb vest option. Those numbers are not a beginner loading prescription. Check your event’s rules and work with your coach on load, repetitions, and running distance.
A vest changes the whole session. Establish comfortable movement and volume without it before adding resistance. Keep initial loaded sessions short; hills, running, and high-repetition circuits do not all need to progress at once.
Start with a brief, easy session and a load you can control. Repeat it comfortably before changing one variable: weight, time, pace, or terrain. Stop for pain, numbness, dizziness, or unusual breathlessness. Get individual guidance if an injury or medical condition affects loaded exercise.
Track your weighted walks
In the Rucking App, choose weighted vest or backpack, enter your complete carried load, and tap Start Ruck. Record GPS distance, time, pace, and estimated calories, then compare repeat sessions.

For a manual estimate, use the Rucking Calorie Calculator. Calorie estimates help compare walks; use your effort, movement, and recovery to decide how to progress. See the app guide for current features.
Log the parts of the workout separately
Record load, repetitions, running or walking distance, and time. The loaded-walking calculator is useful for walks and rucks, but it does not measure the calorie cost of an entire mixed CrossFit workout.
