5.11 CrossFit Vests: TacTec Model Differences and Workout Fit

A 5.11 vest used for CrossFit should be identified by its exact model. The TacTec Trainer and TacTec Plate Carrier have different product identities and loading instructions.

Check the model before using a workout standard

Confirm the carrier, approved inserts, and complete weight rather than assuming a plate pair equals the workout load. A Trainer listing is not a substitute for the Plate Carrier’s specifications. Check fit through pull-ups, push-ups, squats, and any prescribed running before a demanding session. Follow the event’s current load and scaling rules, with coaching when appropriate. A published benchmark load is not a recommendation for a beginner, and an affiliate listing does not prove that its selected bundle meets an event standard.

  • Follow the host’s current load, partitioning, and scaling rules.
  • Count the complete vest weight, including its carrier.
  • Practice equipment fit and movement quality before the event.

Prepare for the workout you will actually perform

Murph consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another 1-mile run. Follow your event’s rules for vest weight, movement standards, and partitioning. Weigh the complete vest rather than assuming the plate label equals total weight.

Practice each movement and build appropriate unloaded volume before adding a vest. Where partitioning is allowed, 20 rounds of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 squats produces the full middle totals. Scale repetitions, running, movements, or load with your coach. A half workout reduces total volume; taking a break halfway through the full totals still leaves the full workout. Consider heat, pacing, and recovery as part of preparation.

If you have back, neck, joint, or balance problems, discuss added-load exercise with a clinician before starting. Harvard Health explains the cautions around wearable weights.

Compare gear by loading system

Check the 5.11 TacTec Trainer listing on Amazon. Match style 56693 and package contents; plates may be separate. Compare the Wolf Tactical weighted vest plate carrier as another front-and-back carrier.
