A Murph Challenge vest needs secure fit and the correct total load for your event. A benchmark weight is an event standard, not a universal first workout prescription.
Count the carrier as well as its plates
Check the host’s movement, load, and partitioning rules before choosing equipment. Two inserts labeled 8.75 lb total 17.5 lb before the shell; weigh the complete vest if a 20 lb setup is required. Test pull-up shoulder clearance, push-up depth, squat hip clearance, and easy removal. A backpack is not an interchangeable Murph vest when the rules require a vest. Plan scaling and heat management with your coach, and rehearse manageable components before attempting full volume.
- Confirm the exact model and complete load before using it.
- Test the fit and intended movement with a manageable setup.
- Record the session and recovery before changing resistance.

Prepare for the workout you will actually perform
Murph consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another 1-mile run. Follow your event’s rules for vest weight, movement standards, and partitioning. Weigh the complete vest rather than assuming the plate label equals total weight.
Practice each movement and build appropriate unloaded volume before adding a vest. Where partitioning is allowed, 20 rounds of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 squats produces the full middle totals. Scale repetitions, running, movements, or load with your coach. A half workout reduces total volume; taking a break halfway through the full totals still leaves the full workout. Consider heat, pacing, and recovery as part of preparation.
If you have back, neck, joint, or balance problems, discuss added-load exercise with a clinician before starting. Harvard Health explains the cautions around wearable weights.
Compare gear by loading system
Compare the Wolf Tactical weighted vest plate carrier, 5.11 TacTec Trainer, and Kensui EZ-VEST MAX V2 by complete cost, working load, and fit. Kensui uses external gym plates; the carriers need their own approved inserts. Check selected configurations and included weights.

Track loaded walks with the Rucking app
For the walking part of your routine, record total carried weight, route, distance, pace, and time. Compare similar sessions rather than judging progress only by a calorie number. The Rucking app is available for iPhone and Android.
Plan a loaded walk with the Weighted Vest Calorie Calculator or Rucking Calorie Calculator. Use the Rucking Weight Loss Calculator to explore longer-term projections alongside your nutrition plan. These are estimates, not measured energy expenditure or promised weight loss. Walking estimates do not measure a lifting session, mixed WOD, running workout, or therapeutic effect.
